DEAR DIANA: The word “discipline” turns me off. I don’t know why, but when I think of the word, I think of harsh punishment and authoritarian control. I value my freedom and individual responsibility. How can I embrace “discipline” and find the motivation to do what I should do for increased productivity, better health, improved relationships, and a stronger sense of self? What other word could I use to motivate me to do things I know are good for me? —REBEL WITH A CLUE
DEAR REBEL: I completely understand why the word “discipline” might turn you off. In our instant gratification culture, we are encouraged to seek immediate rewards, quick fixes, and shortcuts. Media and entertainment don’t help. Discipline is often portrayed as dull, boring, and joyless and is contrasted with the glamor and spontaneity of a carefree lifestyle. Modern culture encourages self-indulgence and permissiveness while avoiding pain, discomfort, and prolonged effort.
